Figured it out - needed to install all of the packages listed above :P -- wasn't entirely obvious since the compile errors were a bit cryptic. :)

I'm running 64bit CentOS 5.4 and the only additional packages I needed to install were libjpeg-devel, libpng-devel, and libmcrypt-devel but after make install - there's no php-fpm /usr/local/sbin and the only file I have in /usr/local/etc is pear.conf. Any ideas what may have gone wrong? I followed the steps word for word and received no errors.

The only thing I did differently was use php 5.11 .. here are the php / fpm tarballs I used:

wget http://us.php.net/get/php-5.2.11.tar.bz2/from/www.php.net/mirror
http://php-fpm.org/downloads/php-5.2.11-fpm-0.5.13.diff.gz

Thanks in advance for the help :P
