Fearing death

Filed under: Day to day — jorge @ 19:16

Like I just said a few moments ago to Marte, I wish I was religious. I wish that I 100% believed that there is in fact something after death. I’ll explain.

I’ve never been afraid of death, always been comfortable that it’s a part of life, the circle of life, as the Lion King so eloquently put it. But last night I had a dream that scared me.

I was in an airplane, sitting just behind the pilots, in a small plane. Suddenly the plane dropped, and we dived with high speed towards the ground. I could see the ground approaching quickly, and all I could think of was Marte and Michael, and that this would be a quick death, and I would feel no pain. We hit the ground.
And everything turned black. I couldn’t see, I couldn’t hear, feel, nothing. And that’s what scares me.

Is the afterlife that? Do you cease to exist? Or do you wander around as a spirit on your own world? I guess it’s not dying I fear, it’s losing the ability to love, laugh, smile and feel things.

  1. It was bold of you to share your dream and ask about afterlife. I am a Christ follower and believe that I will live forever in his kingdom, according to the scriptures. I’ll share a few relevant ones.

At the end of the gospel of John, chapter 20 verse 30, speaking after John had seen Christ risen from the dead, said:

“Jesus did many other powerful works in front of His followers. They are not written in this book. But these are written so you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. When you put your trust in Him you will have life that lasts forever through His name.”

Then in Acts 1:3 Luke writes: “After He had suffered much and then died, He showed Himself alive in many sure ways fro forty days.”

These two men, among many others, knew Jesus before he was killed and after he rose from the dead to certify his claim that he is God.

This is the message that was preached by many to many, here are some more samples:

Acts 4:12 “There is no way to be saved from the punishment of sin through anyone else. For there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we can be saved.”

Acts 13:32 “We brung you the Good NBews…….God has finished this for us…..He did this by raising Jesus from the dead…….God proved that Jesus was His Son by raising Him from the dead. He will never die again.” further in verse 38: “You may be forgiven of your sins by this One I am telling you about. Everyone who puts his trust in Christ will be made right with God.”

There are many other verses in the Bible that say the same thing: trusting Jesus is what makes us right with God. I have this believing faith, which is God’s free gift to us, because He loves us that much.

Please email me if you wish to ask anything about this faith.

Please read John in the New Testament, it is written to help us know and believe the truth.

You are brave to post your inquirery and I am honored to respond.

    Michael

  2. Hi from Lisbon, Jorge!

Sometimes I wish that would be true, just like you. I guess we don’t want neither to be alone nor to face that all this will come to an end. Life is indeed a miracle, and humanity further so. However, I see no reason why would we be granted a such thing as an afterlife. I deeply respect those who believe, and their beliefs. But I think we’re not that important, we’re just a tiny part of the universe – whatever it may be – that evolves constantly. Everything transforms from the beginning of space-time as we know it, and the beauty of it is that what was will in some way determine what will be, creating a living memory. We can see our descendants are those who will carry our “afterlife”, on a species perspective, just as we are the result of our ancestors’ lives so in a way their lives haven’t ended. It is weird, as I am typing this, maybe the problem is that we just don’t want to give up such beauty, liberty and love.
