Firefox and Java on 64 bit Linux

Filed under: Linux — jorge @ 09:46

Wondering what you need to do in order to install Java on a 64 bit Linux installation? Few and simple steps really.

First head over to the Download-section at http://www.java.com. Select to download the file named Linux x64 RPM (if you’re using an RPM-based distribution like Fedora). Once it’s downloaded, and assuming it has been downloaded to the folder Download, do the following:

$ su -
# chmod +x /home/jorge/Download/jre-6u14-linux-x64-rpm.bin
# ./home/jorge/Download/jre-6u14-linux-x64-rpm.bin

After agreeing to the license terms, just type Yes and press enter. Now making the plugin work with Firefox. Just execute the following command:

# ln -s /usr/java/latest/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/

Cross your fingers, restart Firefox, and things should hopefully be working. :) Head over here to check out if it worked.

Good luck!

Just another day

Filed under: Day to day — jorge @ 11:11

Things sure seem to be going by quickly these days. Michael is growing by the day, always up to mischief, and the 21st is approaching, the day we’ll hopefully be able to see what gender our baby is going to be. Things are going well at work, I really enjoy what I do for a living. Guess not people are fortunate that way. At home, well, I’m hoping to get some renewed energy in order to do more things around there, fix various things. Soon done with fixing the fireplace, woo!

On the geeky side, I haven’t done much, not really. I’ve ripped my music-collection to my Openfiler-system, and played around with Rhythmbox a bit (hence the previous post about it). I’ve been meaning to play around with my Acer Aspire One more, and add more things to the guide I made, but I just haven’t felt like it. =/ Which is a bummer, lots of people come with really good comments to add to the guide. It will come eventually though, just give me some time. ;)

I’ve discovered http://www.last.fm by the way! My username there is joba7, if you want to have a look at what I listen to. I realise that listening to their radiothingie costs money, but I just signed up for the statistics. It’s a great way to discover new music with. I’ve been planning to make a flatfile music library. We’ll see how that goes, so many plans, so little time.

I’m currently listening to the song Please by Staind. Check it out, it’s good. :)
